Soft Pneumatic-Network (Pneu-Net) Actuators (SPAs) have been used extensively in making soft grippers, due to their simple driving forms and large bending deformation. However, the capabilities of the regular SPAs in complex soft gripping application environments are alone insufficient. This work, thus, proposes a modular soft gripper that combines the functionalities of regular and herringbone actuators. The bending deformation characteristics of the two actuators under pneumatic pressures are verified by finite element (FE) simulations and experiments. The functional characteristics of the two actuators are investigated experimentally through a series of methods including the blocking force test, lifting test, grasping strength test, and suction force test. The experimental results show that the regular actuator has the advantages of greater longitudinal bending deformation and higher blocking force; while, the herringbone actuator has better lifting stability and grasping strength due to its conformal deformations both in longitudinal and transverse directions. In addition, the vacuum experiments demonstrate that the actuators can lift heavy plate-like objects through vacuum suction. Based on the functional behaviors of the two actuators, the proposed modular gripper is loaded onto automatic equipment, and the gripper is tested to hook, grasp, or lift various objects with different shapes, sizes, and weights. In essence, the modular and multi-functional characteristics of the design make it a promising candidate for relatively complex and advanced gripping applications.

A novel coordination polymer [Cd(bpy)(tp)(H_2O)]_n (10 has been prepared through hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterized, and the compound gives strong fluorescent emission. The structure of the compound consists of CdN_2O_4 octahedron linked through bridging terephthalate (tp) into 1D structure, and then a 3D supramolecular structure is formed adopting herringbone packing in the solid state through pi-pi stacking and hydrogen bonding interactions.

This paper presents neural network regression models for predicting the nonlinear static and linearized dynamic reaction forces of spiral grooved gas journal bearings. The partial differential equations (PDEs) are sampled, based on a full factorial and randomly spaced parameter set. Feed-forward neural network (FNN) architectures are developed for modeling the PDEs and therefore replacing the time-consuming discrete and iterative solution procedure used to this date. A significant speed-up factor of >10(3) in computation time is achieved, compared to solving the PDE numerically. Furthermore, the FNN allows for multi-dimensional interpolation, which makes global system optimization easily possible. This is demonstrated by a real-case mtordynamic system optimization. By using the neural network meta-models, a complete rotordynamic system optimization time reduction of factor 300 is achieved.

Sodium 3-methyl-4-nitrophenolate dihydrate (Na3M4NP) is a new stable non-linear optical crystal of Cc monoclinic symmetry. The organic anions having an average calculated molecular hyperpolarisability #beta#_(xxx) approx= 20 * 10~(-30) esu are organised in a herringbone motif, inducing, together with water molecules, a very dense packing of NaO_6 edge shared octahedra. A three-dimensional network of homogeneous and short hydrogen bonds close-packs the herringbone motifs in a staggered arrangement. The crystal structure is simply described and explained in relation to basic inorganic structural models.

Herringbone grooved journal bearings (HGJBs) are widely used in micro-turbocompressor applications due to their high load-carrying capacity, low friction, and oil-free solution. However, the performance of these bearings is sensitive to manufacturing deviations, which can lead to significant variations in their performance and stability. In this study, design guidelines for robust design against manufacturing deviations of HGJB supported micro-turbocompressors are proposed. These guidelines are based on surrogate model-assisted multi-objective optimization using ensembles of artificial neural networks trained on a large dataset of rotor and bearing designs as well as operating conditions. The developed framework is then applied to a series of case studies representative of heat-pump and fuel-cell micro-turbomachines. To highlight the importance of rotor geometry and bearing aspect ratio in the robustness of HGJBs, two types of optimizations are performed: one focusing on optimizing the bearing geometry, and the other focusing on both the bearing and rotor geometries. The analysis of the Pareto fronts and Pareto optima of each type of optimization and case study allows for the derivation of design guidelines for the robust design of HGJB supported rotors. Results suggest that by following these guidelines, it is possible to significantly improve the robustness of herringbone grooved journal bearings against manufacturing deviations, resulting in stable operation. The best design achieved +8 μm tolerance on the bearing clearance, and designs optimized for both rotor and bearing geometry outperformed those optimized for bearing geometry alone. This work successfully identifies guidelines for the robust design of herringbone grooved journal bearings in micro-turbocompressor applications, demonstrating the strength of surrogate model-assisted multi-objective optimization. It provides a valuable tool for engineers seeking to optimize the performance and reliability of these bearings.

Self-ordering growth of nanoarrays on strained metallic interfaces is an attractive option for preparing highly ordered nanotemplates. The great potential of this natural templating approach is that symmetry, feature sizes, and density are predicted to depend on the interfacial stress in these strained layers, which can be adjusted by changing the substrate-thin film composition, temperature, and adlayer coverage. This bottom-up approach of growing nanostructured twodimensional ordered arrays of clusters on the misfit dislocation networks of strained metallic thin films and surfaces requires a detailed understanding of the nucleation and film-adsorbate interaction processes. Here we show how high resolution, large scale, variable temperature scanning tunneling microscopy imaging can improve our understanding of these self-assembly processes.
